Nick Saban Weighs In on Miami’s Chances Against Ohio State in Cotton Bowl image

The Miami Hurricanes are set to face the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl Classic, and once again, Miami’s success will depend heavily on quarterback Carson Beck. As the Hurricanes prepare for one of their biggest games of the season, several high-profile voices have shared their thoughts on the matchup including legendary former Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Saban discussed what Miami needs to do to pull off a win against Ohio State. One of the first things he pointed out was the long break between games and how that can impact a team’s performance. Since Miami’s late-November game against Pittsburgh, the Hurricanes have played just once, which Saban believes can affect timing and rhythm.

Despite the layoff, Saban made it clear that Miami’s offense will be the deciding factor in the game. According to him, the Hurricanes will need to score points early and often to keep up with a talented Ohio State team.

“I think they’re gonna have to score more points to be able to beat Ohio State because it’s a tough matchup against the Buckeyes,” Saban said. “They’ve got playmakers, and they can make a lot of explosive plays.”

Saban’s message was simple: Miami cannot afford a slow or sloppy offensive performance. That responsibility will fall largely on Beck, who must be sharp, confident, and in control throughout the game. Against a defense like Ohio State’s, mistakes can quickly turn into points the other way.

Protecting the football will be critical for Beck. Ohio State’s defense has shown the ability to take advantage of turnovers, and Saban stressed that Miami must avoid giving the Buckeyes extra opportunities.

Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson echoed similar ideas when discussing the importance of patience and composure. Dawson emphasized that forcing plays or getting impatient can lead to costly mistakes, especially in high-pressure games like this one.

Staying balanced on offense and letting the game come naturally has worked for Miami in the past. Dawson and Beck will look to lean on that approach again against Ohio State, mixing the run and pass to keep the Buckeyes off balance.

With advice coming from one of the most successful coaches in college football history, the path forward is clear for Miami. If the Hurricanes can stay calm, protect the football, and let Carson Beck lead an efficient offense, they will give themselves a real chance to defeat Ohio State and make a statement on a national stage.
