Kalen DeBoer says Alabama football is built for this moment image

Kalen DeBoer believes Alabama is exactly where it needs to be.

The Alabama head coach said the Crimson Tide’s preparation for Oklahoma has been built on health, discipline, and attention to detail as the College Football Playoff arrives. With finals completed and graduation responsibilities behind them, DeBoer said the focus has narrowed.

“This is what you work for,” DeBoer said. “You work to get to this moment, where you’ve got a chance to reach your goals.”

DeBoer noted Alabama is healthier than it has been in recent weeks, a factor he said has directly impacted practice tempo and depth. Receiver Germie Bernard and center Parker Brailsford, both of whom played through injuries earlier in the season, are among those benefiting from added rest.

“When each guy can be a little healthier, it makes a difference,” DeBoer said. “It makes a difference in how you practice. You’ve got more depth, more reps, and better tempo.”

At tight end, Josh Cuevas and Danny Lewis will both be available tonight. DeBoer praised Cuevas for his versatility and experience within the system.

“He can kind of do it all,” DeBoer said. “He’s comfortable in the box, on the line, flexed out. He knows his assignment, and he’s extremely consistent.”

Lewis, DeBoer said, will continue to be used situationally rather than as an every-down option, though his understanding of the offense remains a strength.

Offensively, DeBoer emphasized the importance of staying ahead of the chains, converting on third down, and protecting the football.

“We can’t hurt ourselves,” he said. “Not being behind the sticks is huge. Staying on the football field matters.”

Defensively, the focus begins with identification and tackling, particularly against Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer.

“He can do so many things,” DeBoer said. “Not just with his arm, but with his feet.”

Special teams have also been addressed following a blocked punt in the SEC Championship Game. DeBoer called the mistake “a moment” and said the issues were correctable with added reps.

As Alabama steps onto the playoff stage, DeBoer’s message has not changed.

“If you’re not giving everything you’ve got now,” he said, “you really don’t belong here.”
