From the top recruit in his class entering high school to Sacramento State, Mikey Williams hasn't followed a straight line in his basketball career.
But at Sac State, he's found an opportunity, playing for head coach Mike Bibby on a team with talented players who have wound up teaming up at the small Division I program.
Sacramento State plays at UCLA on Tuesday night, its highest-profile game of the season so far.
Through five games, Williams has scored double figures in all five, including a 30-point outing. He's also averaging 5.6 assists, grabbing 3.0 rebounds per game and shooting 37% from 3-point range.
He may not be at the pinnacle some expected, but Williams is making the most of his shot.

Why is Mikey Williams playing at Sacramento State?
Williams originally committed to Memphis out of high school, but he never played for the Tigers. Gun charges led to him entering the transfer portal. He eventually pled guilty to one misdemeanor.
The 6-foot-3 Williams ended up at UCF, and in 2024-25, he averaged 5.1 points per game.
Williams transferred after last season and came to Sacramento State, which is led by Bibby as head coach and general manager Shaquille O'Neal.
With the caveat of it being an early call, Williams was once ranked the No. 1 player in his class when he was in eighth grade.
He had more than three million followers on Instagram before he was a junior in high school.
His name is well known, and now that name is at a school that wouldn't ordinarily be in the spotlight. With Williams running the show, Sac State has eyes on it.
