St. John's scored a lot of points Saturday afternoon.

It wasn't enough to win.

The Red Storm put up a 96-spot at Madison Square Garden. But the visiting Alabama Crimson Tide scored 103. Yep, in regulation.

It's the first time St. John's has scored this many points in a game and lost since 1965, according to Jon Rothstein.

Specifically, it was a 113-97 loss to Syracuse on Dec. 30, 1965.

That was Lou Carnesecca's first year as the St. John's head coach.

And just to emphasize how long ago it was, that was Jim Boeheim's senior year as a player for the Orange. He scored 21 points in that game, supplementing the legendary Dave Bing, who dropped 38.

What can be taken from this Saturday? It's hard to say.

Everyone knows Alabama plays really, really fast and scores a lot of points. St. John's decided to keep up with them on Saturday.

It didn't end up being enough in the end, but it's a positive that the Red Storm could score as efficiently as they did, even if they came up a few possessions short.

The next time, St. John's may find that its scoring prowess is more than enough to beat most teams.

And if Alabama and the Johnnies meet again in March, we'll certainly be able to expect a track meet.
