Ed Cooley suspension, explained: Georgetown coach punished for accidentally hitting fan with water bottle image

Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley is in his third year with the Hoyas, looking to lead the program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021.

However, Cooley hit a roadblock on Saturday night, when his emotions got the best of him after a loss to Xavier. Cooley was caught throwing a water bottle into the stands, which ended up hitting a fan in the front row.

As a result, Georgetown is suspending Cooley for his conduct on Saturday night, as associate head coach Jeff Battle will fill in. The decision was made by the Georgetown athletic department, not the Big East conference.

Here's a breakdown of Cooley's suspension.

Ed Cooley suspension, explained

On Saturday night, Georgetown lost to Xavier 80-77, marking the Hoyas' fourth loss in the last seven games. The game ended when Malik Mack missed a potential game-tying three, completing a game where Xavier came back from down five.

As Mack's shot missed, Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley was caught on camera throwing a water bottle into the stands, but the water bottle directly hit a child in the front row. Cooley immediately apologized for the incident after the game, but the program felt it had to take action.

On Sunday, Georgetown suspended Cooley for the team's next game against Coppin State.

"I met with Coach Cooley today to discuss the incident which occurred after last night's game against Xavier," AD Lee Reed said. "I expressed that his conduct did not align with the standards we expect of our coaches, nor does it reflect the values of Georgetown Athletics or Georgetown University. As a result, Coach Cooley will be suspended for the next game vs. Coppin State."

Cooley apologized again for his actions in a statement, especially towards the family, whom he said he knows well.

"I am deeply sorry for my actions during last night's game, and sincerely apologize to the Nyahkoon family, whom I have known for years and regard as my own family," Cooley said. "My conduct was unacceptable and does not represent who I am or the leader I strive to be. I want to also apologize to the Georgetown community, team, fans, the league and my family. I take full responsibility for my actions and their consequences. I will learn from this experience to ensure it never happens again."

Cooley will return to the sidelines on New Year's Eve, when Georgetown is set to host St. John's.

Ed Cooley contract

Cooley joined Georgetown from Providence in 2023 on a deal that will reportedly pay him $6 million per season. Cooley is currently in his third season with the Hoyas, but it's unclear how long his contract with Georgetown will last.
