The San Antonio Spurs remained undefeated in preseason play after a 134-130 win over the Utah Jazz on Friday night, improving to 3-0.
As usual, Victor Wembanyama led the way for San Antonio, finishing with 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists. But the Spurs also got a big boost from an unexpected contributor — David Jones Garcia.
Garcia finished second on the team in scoring, joining Wembanyama as the only two Spurs players to record at least 20 points. The undrafted forward totaled 20 points, five rebounds and four assists in the win, marking a breakout performance after scoring just 11 points combined across San Antonio’s first two preseason games.
The 23-year-old Garcia has taken a long road to this point. After going undrafted out of Memphis, he’s already been part of three NBA organizations — the Philadelphia 76ers, Utah Jazz and now the Spurs — all on two-way contracts.
Before his professional journey began, Garcia spent time at three different colleges in four years. He played two seasons at DePaul, one at St. John’s and one at Memphis, where he averaged career highs of 21.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game as a senior. This was a step up from his junior season, where he averaged 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds.
Garcia’s strong showing against Utah could help him secure a role on San Antonio’s roster as the team continues its preseason schedule. The Spurs will face the Indiana Pacers twice before opening the regular season Oct. 22 on the road against the Dallas Mavericks.
