The San Antonio Spurs are making noise in the Western Conference.
On Saturday, the Spurs became the second team to defeat the defending-champion Oklahoma City Thunder (the Portland Trail Blazers beat them by two points on Nov. 5).
Even more impressively, San Antonio has won five of its last six games and is getting healthier at the right time.
Surprisingly, though, Air Alamo’s Tyler Watts believes it would be in the franchise’s best interest to attempt a ‘Luka Doncic-like heist’ involving star point guard De’Aaron Fox to help them take a massive step forward.
“The San Antonio Spurs could pull off the blockbuster trade of the year if they are willing to part with De’Aaron Fox,” Watts wrote Sunday. “Fans will remember the Lakers gave up Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and one first-round draft pick to get Luka Doncic at the 2025 deadline.”
“It was a shocking price for a top-five player in the world. Victor Wembanyama isn’t going anywhere, but ESPN Tim MacMahon made it clear that the young guard duo (Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle) is off limits."
"San Antonio doesn’t want to waste a minute. They could quickly vault into serious title contention with the right trade. De’Aaron Fox could become the casualty of this blockbuster. He is playing like an All-Star and may keep the package light for San Antonio.”
Fox has proven to be an integral part of San Antonio’s offense since getting traded from the Sacramento Kings to the Spurs in February.
Fox, who missed the Spurs’ first eight games with a right hamstring injury, is beginning to build rapport with Wembanyama and has found new life as a perimeter shooter (he’s shooting 39.1% from three this season, which is a career-best for the Kentucky product).
Still, if the Spurs determine they would be better served by including the Fox in a trade for a contributor that could take the franchise’s contention status to the next level, the former lottery pick will be on the move once again.
At the end of the day, the Spurs’ ultimate goal is to build the best possible roster around Victor Wembanyama, which could require them to make a challenging roster decision in the foreseeable future.
