Dallas Hoops Journal's Jake Rogers recently proposed a blockbuster trade that would send Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson to the San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs would trade Kelly Olynyk and Lindy Waters III for Thompson and guard Dante Exum.
Thompson is still considered one of the NBA's top outside shooters. He could be a useful player to pair with star forward Victor Wembanyama.
"For a Spurs team built around Wembanyama’s interior dominance, Thompson’s shooting gravity creates cleaner driving lanes and reduces the load on young creators," Rogers said. "Just as importantly, Thompson’s profile fits postseason basketball."

Thompson is making $16.6 million this season and has one more season left on his deal. The Spurs would also add Exum, who won't play this season due to injury.
"Thompson’s salary becomes expiring in 2026-27, which could be used as a salary-matching mechanism for the Spurs next league year if he proves to be a player the team wants to move on from."
He's averaging 11.1 points and shooting 35.7% from three in 30 games this season. He's in his second season with the Mavericks after coming over in a sign-and-trade from the Warriors in the 2024 offseason.
"What San Antonio gains is role clarity. Even in decline, Thompson remains one of the league’s most respected off-ball threats."
Thompson played his first 11 NBA seasons with Golden State, where he helped the Warriors win four NBA Championships. He's considered one of the best shooters in league history, as he's shot 40.8% from deep in his career.
