Phoenix Suns owner Matt Ishbia spoke glowingly about star guard Devin Booker during an appearance Monday on Draymond Green’s podcast, discussing both his first years overseeing the franchise and the bond he has built with the team’s longest-tenured star.
Since purchasing the Suns in early 2023, Ishbia has made several high-profile, win-now moves designed to push Phoenix into championship contention. Those decisions included the blockbuster trade for Kevin Durant and the acquisition of Bradley Beal. But injuries, roster imbalance and early postseason exits have kept the Suns from reaching the expectations attached to their star-powered core.
Ishbia said Booker’s reaction to the organization’s aggressive approach showed him the guard’s character and commitment to Phoenix.
“He means so much to the Arizona community, the Phoenix community — and he knows that,” Ishbia said. “You find out who your real friends are when everyone else turns their back on you. When we went through some tough times, it would be easy for a franchise player to say, ‘Hey, I put my time in. I’m ready to go.’ Instead, he did the reverse. He said, ‘I’m with you, Matt. I believe in what we’re doing. I’m all in with you. I’ll even sign an extension. I want to be here with you. Let’s go do this.’”
Ishbia added that Booker’s loyalty has strengthened their partnership.
“He’s had my back. I’ll always have his back,” Ishbia said. “It’s been special, and I’m very lucky to have him.”
Booker signed another long-term extension with Phoenix and is under contract through the 2029-30 season. For Suns fans, Ishbia’s comments reinforce the sense of stability between ownership and the franchise cornerstone as they continue to push for the first championship in team history.
