Restricted free agent Quentin Grimes and the Philadelphia 76ers are still in contract talks with the preseason fast approaching.
Grimes is coming off a career-best year and is seeking a payday. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, however, the 25-year-old and the 76ers were “very far apart” on a new deal less than a week ago, and it doesn’t appear that has changed.
Grimes was acquired by the 76ers ahead of the trade deadline in a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. The 2021 first-round pick impressed with the injury-riddled Sixers, averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals across 33.6 minutes per game in 28 regular-season outings with Philadelphia.

76ers make new decision on Quentin Grimes
If the 76ers and Grimes cannot reach an agreement, the swingman will ultimately accept his qualifying offer and play out the 2025-26 campaign with a no-trade clause. Grimes and his agent reportedly requested to move the deadline to accept the qualifying offer back from Oct. 1, but the team declined, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
“Restricted free agent guard Quentin Grimes is not on the Sixers’ team flight for preseason games in Abu Dhabi, sources say," he wrote. "Philadelphia has also declined the request from Grimes’ agent, David Bauman, to push back the 10/1 deadline to accept his qualifying offer.”
As the Sixers prepare for two exhibition games against the New York Knicks on Thursday and Saturday in Abu Dhabi, Grimes faces a major decision on his future.
He will have until Wednesday’s deadline to make a final call. If he accepts his $8.7 million qualifying offer, he would hold a no-trade clause, while the 76ers would risk losing him for nothing if another deal isn’t finalized.
