There might not be any team in a more interesting spot than the Philadelphia 76ers, and their future has a wild outlook.
Over the past few years, the 76ers have been trying to compete for a championship, building a roster around Joel Embiid. While stars such as Ben Simmons, Jimmy Butler and James Harden have come and gone, Embiid has remained the centerpiece of the organization.
Of course, that hasn’t always led to the success that the franchise has long hoped for, from disappearing in the biggest playoff moments to injuries derailing seasons, Embiid’s tenure as the 76ers’ leader has been anything but smooth. That’s why it might be wise for Philadelphia to begin looking at its next era, led by a different star on the roster.
Time for Maxey to take over?
In a recent Bleacher Report article from Grant Hughes, he predicted who every team’s best player would be in three years. While Embiid is only two years removed from his MVP, Hughes still opted to give that spot to Tyrese Maxey.
While Hughes noted that Maxey likely won’t reach the same level as Embiid did during his MVP season, there is a legitimate argument that he will be the better player in three years. It might not even be that crazy to argue he’s the better player currently, given that Embiid rarely steps on the floor.
Although the 76ers will probably spend the next year or two looking to build around Embiid, it would smart for them to switch their focus to building around Maxey before it’s too late.
