Ahead of their season opener against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, the Philadelphia 76ers were among the most active teams on Saturday, the NBA’s deadline for non-guaranteed contracts.
Following a 16-point win against the Timberwolves in their preseason finale Friday, the Sixers faced several roster decisions. To start, DeAndre Williams was signed and then waived to make him eligible for assignment to Philadelphia’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.
The team also waived four players who spent time on the preseason roster. The most notable cut was MarJon Beauchamp, a former first-round pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2022 NBA Draft. Beauchamp has played three seasons in the league but was unable to secure a spot in Philadelphia’s crowded rotation.
Guard Kennedy Chandler was also waived despite a strong preseason showing. Chandler last appeared in the NBA in 2023 with the Memphis Grizzlies. Forward Malcolm Hill, who last saw NBA action during the 2022-23 season, was another cut. The final roster move involved Saint Thomas, who was released after signing an Exhibit 10 contract earlier in the preseason.
All five players are expected to report to the Delaware Blue Coats, where they’ll have an opportunity to continue developing their games within the Sixers’ system.
Philadelphia now shifts focus to its regular-season debut against Boston at TD Garden. With Paul George and Jared McCain sidelined, head coach Nick Nurse is expected to start rookie VJ Edgecombe and veteran Kelly Oubre Jr. alongside Tyrese Maxey, Adem Bona and Joel Embiid.
