Lost in the shuffle of the Oklahoma City Thunder's 49-point rout of the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Cup quarterfinals is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's continued march toward a legendary mark.
In helping the Thunder to a 138-89 win over the Suns, Gilgeous-Alexander on Wednesday dropped a game-high 28 points on only 15 shots. The reigning MVP added eight assists and two steals as Oklahoma City tied the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors for the best start in NBA history at 24-1.
In only 27 minutes, Gilgeous-Alexander managed to continue a streak that began on Nov. 1, 2024. For the 96th consecutive game, the Thunder superstar scored at least 20 points.
This is the second-longest such streak in NBA history, and Gilgeous-Alexander is getting ever closer to Wilt Chamberlain, who still tops the list after more than six decades.
Between Oct. 19, 1961, and Jan. 19, 1963, Chamberlain scored at least 20 points in a league-record 126 consecutive appearances.
If Gilgeous-Alexander continues his current pace, the record will be his well before the season ends.
It is yet more proof that each time the Thunder take the floor, fans are going to see history in some form or another.
