Bragging rights won't be the only thing on the line at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

With the Paris Olympics less than 12 months away, the upcoming World Cup is the first opportunity for countries to earn their spot at the summer games. 32 countries will enter the tournament with hopes of going to the Olympics, but only seven will secure a spot.

It isn't as simple as the top seven countries from the tournament will qualify for the Olympics. There are groups within the groups that impact those automatic bids.

How FIBA Basketball World Cup impacts automatic bids for Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

A total of 32 countries will participate in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. Of those 32 countries, seven will earn a spot in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

Rather than going to the countries that finish in the top seven, those spots will be distributed to two countries each in America and Europe, plus one each from Africa, Asia and Oceania. The countries from those regions that finish the highest in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 standings will earn a ticket to France.

For example, Iran finished in 23rd place in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, but because it finished ahead of Japan, Philippines, China, Jordan and Iran, it qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics as the top team from FIBA Asia. The same happened to Nigeria, with its No. 17 finish being the best of FIBA Africa.
