It was rather unexpected recently when news came out that Stephen Curry was leaving Under Armour.
The Golden State Warriors superstar had a long history with the company as his shoe brand.
Only now are some reasons starting to emerge about what happened with Curry and Under Armour.
Some of the story may involve Caitlin Clark, the WNBA superstar for the Indiana Fever. According to Bloomberg News, Under Armour tried to recruit Clark to join the brand. They didn't get Clark, though, as Nike's pitch won.
That was a "sore point" for Curry, according to the report.
Clark is the most popular women's basketball player in the world. Having her as a shoe teammate would've been a major deal.
But "Under Armour's offer trailed the total value of Nike's pitch," according to Bloomberg.
Curry would've essentially handed off his brand to Clark when he retired. Instead, Under Armour has lost Curry and doesn't have Clark.
The greatest shooter of all time, Curry is now rocking various different brands pregame and in games as he moves toward a decision. Landing Curry will be a big deal for whichever company gets him.
Maybe it'll be Nike, which ended up with Clark instead of UA. Or maybe it'll be an off-the-beaten-path company. Nike had butchered its pitch to Curry originally when he first left for Under Armour, so that might not be the perfect match.
It's not clear when Curry may make a decision on a new shoe company. But in the meantime, we're starting to learn what may have happened with UA.
