The New York Knicks made their best effort to address their depth issues from last year this offseason.
They signed former Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson, a versatile big man who can play all over the front court; Guerschon Yabusele, a veteran point guard in Malcolm Brogdon, and re-signed sharpshooter Landry Shamet.
While all of these pieces are solid, the Knicks could use a player who can contribute now but is still a couple of years away from coming into his own.
Knicks Trade Idea Lands Walker Kessler From Jazz
In a trade idea proposed by Nathaniel Holloway of Athlon Sports, New York would trade for the Utah Jazz's young center, Walker Kessler.
New York Knicks receive: Walker Kessler
Utah Jazz receive: Miles McBride, Tyler Kolek, and draft capital
"With the Knicks’ abundance of guard depth, moving on from both Kolek and McBride would likely not be a major issue for them, though McBride is a fan favorite," wrote Holloway.
"Last season, the 24-year-old big man averaged 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.4 blocks per game while shooting 66.3% from the field. For Kessler, he is known for his defense, primarily his rim protection as he is one of the better shot-blockers in the NBA, which is something the Knicks desperately need."
While the Knicks have plenty of quality guard depth, they are lacking in the frontcourt.
Mitchell Robinson and Ariel Hukporti are talented centers, but they are injured far too often to be relied upon consistently.
Kessler would immediately come in and solidify himself as the backup center in New York, and have a chance to develop into the long-term star the Knicks are always looking for.
