The East could be the Knicks to win next season.

There will be other threats, but the Knicks were only a couple of games away from the NBA Finals, and could very well be back in that spot in less than a year.

They've been busy this offseason and could be interested in adding a former number one overall pick to the roster.

What former No. 1 overall pick did the Knicks reach out to?

Ian Begley of SNY reported that the Knicks reached out to free agent guard Ben Simmons.

Simmons was the first overall pick back in the 2016 NBA Draft.

He had a great start to his career, but has since dealt with injuries and other issues that have made his career feel like a disappointment.

He wasn't on the court often after being traded to Brooklyn, but got some run with the Clippers after being traded there midseason in 2024-25.

His role there was minimal, but he showed he can still contribute to a team in the role he's given.

No team will be willing to give him a long-term, expensive deal, but the Knicks are an example of a team who have had depth issues.

Adding Simmons is a low-risk move because it wouldn't require paying him a hefty salary.

There's only upside if he stays healthy, even if he's only used in certain situations.

The Knicks already have a lot of scoring power and shooting on their roster, so they could use a bigger guard like Simmons, who is focused on playmaking and defense.
