Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson credits routine change for improved free throw shooting image

Mitchell Robinson’s free throw shooting struggles are perhaps his biggest weakness in his game, but on Friday, Robinson showed some serious growth in his efficiency from the charity stripe.

In the Knicks’ 116-107 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, Robinson was superb, scoring 21 points, and snagging 16 rebounds while shooting 7-8 from the free throw line. Robinson entered the game shooting just 6-27 from the line on the season, and in recent weeks was being intentionally fouled by opponents who would rather let him shoot free throws than allow the Knicks to run offense.

Robinson is still shooting just 37 percent from the line this season, but if Friday’s performance is any indication, that number should continue to climb as the season progresses. After the game, Robinson — who normally shoots his free throws with little to no arc — was asked about his improvement, to which he credited a change in the way he shoots free throws.

“I feel way more comfortable,” Robinson said. “Getting my elbow up under it, getting it up in the air a little, it’s been great.”

While he still has a ways to go, Robinson’s improvement from the free throw line could be a major development going forward, as Robinson is already one of the team’s most important players thanks to his rebounding and rim protection.
