New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson has long been one of the league's worst free-throw shooters.
Somehow, it’s getting even worse.
This season, Robinson is shooting just 5-for-25 (20 percent) on free throws. It’s gotten so bad that teams have started to deploy the “Hack-A-Mitch” method that was seen during the postseason the last couple of seasons, where teams would intentionally foul Robinson to put him at the free-throw line and halt the Knicks’ offense.
Robinson’s 20 percent mark is by far the worst for his career, even though he’s a measly 51.1 percent shooter from the line over his career. Additionally, Robinson is challenging the all-time record for worst free-throw percentage in a season, set in 2001 by Ben Wallace, who shot 33 percent from the free-throw line.
Against the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Cup Quarterfinals, Robinson was fouled intentionally multiple times and shot just 2-for-8 from the line.
MSG’s Mike Breen even showed his displeasure with Robinson’s paltry shooting during the broadcast.
“There’s zero arc on his shot. It has no chance to go in. I just wonder what the Knicks shooting coach is telling him,” Breen said.
Robinson will look to improve his free-throw shooting as the season goes on; otherwise, this could present a serious problem for the Knicks come playoff time as they look to snap a 52-year title drought in 2026.
