With championship aspirations in mind, the New York Knicks must improve their perimeter defense.

They rank 28th in opponent three-point field goals, allowing 14.6 per game. Only the New Orleans Pelicans and Utah Jazz allow more.

Ahead of the NBA's trade deadline on February 5, the Knicks are one of the teams rumored to have interest in acquiring a defensive-minded guard. Jose Alvarado of the Pelicans and Keon Ellis of the Sacramento Kings are two names that could be made available in the coming weeks.

On Thursday, The Athletic's James L. Edward III listed another guard New York could consider, but it may be tricky to facilitate a deal.

Ochai Agbaji's minutes with the Raptors have decreased

Toronto Raptors guard Ochai Agabi's minutes have seen a steady decrease since last year. The fourth-year professional and former Kansas standout averaged 27.2 minutes per night in 2024-25, but that number is now down to 15.8.

Could the Knicks have more playing time available to him?

"He’s a low-risk, medium-reward option for New York and could provide some more positivity on the defensive end," wrote Edward. "If he finds his shot again, Agbaji could be able to play in critical moments depending on matchups."

Edward added that Agbaji could be a "nice gamble" for the Knicks, but making a trade for him would require two outgoing players for salaries to match. Power forward Guerschon Yabusele has been a disappointing fit in New York and could help a team like the Raptors with more size in the frontcourt.
