The New York Knicks were reportedly interested in trading for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer, and rumors suggested the feeling may have been mutual.
Following the Milwaukee Bucks’ third consecutive first-round playoff exit, speculation swirled around the nine-time All-Star’s future. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday that Bucks general manager Jon Horst “picked up the Knicks’ call on Antetokounmpo,” adding that the two teams discussed potential offers for Milwaukee’s franchise cornerstone in August.
While Charania also noted that league sources told him the Knicks didn’t believe the Bucks were “serious about entertaining an Antetokounmpo trade,” the report still reignited trade chatter.

Bucks ‘never called’ Knicks about Giannis Antetokounmpo trade
Trade rumors had cooled off following a hectic summer in which the Bucks waived Damian Lillard and signed Myles Turner, though news of the Knicks’ and Giannis’ reported interest brought the speculation back to life. However, Bucks head coach Doc Rivers quickly shut down the rumors Wednesday, according to Eric Nehm of The Athletic.
“You know, I read where it said several conversations, well, that never happened,” Rivers said. “It was a conversation where a team called and Jon has been saying no now for 11 years. I don’t know why this is a story, but I guess it is.”
Unless he requests a trade, the Bucks appear highly unlikely to move their superstar. Rivers also emphasized that Horst has “never called” another team to discuss trading Antetokounmpo.
“I can tell you Jon has never called a team about Giannis,” Rivers added. “That has never happened. And until that happens, you really don’t have a story.”
The Knicks have a chance to contend in a wide-open Eastern Conference with or without Antetokounmpo. While the 30-year-old forward could eventually seek to chase another title elsewhere, the Bucks remain committed to surrounding him with a competitive roster despite recent postseason struggles.
For now, Antetokounmpo appears set to lead the Bucks in his 13th season in Milwaukee, and a trade doesn’t appear imminent.
