A Timberwolves trade for Ja Morant? Rumors dealt harsh reality by beat writer's prediction image

Everyone knows the Minnesota Timberwolves need a point guard.

So welcome to the trade rumor mill the second any floor general becomes available. Trae Young has already been moved, and now Ja Morant is on the block (and some think LaMelo Ball will soon follow).

Morant, the Grizzlies star, is a two-time All Star, 26 years old and under contract through the 2027-28 season.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Friday: "For the first time, the Memphis Grizzlies are entertaining offers to potentially move two-time All-Star Ja Morant ahead of the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline."

Will the Timberwolves trade for Ja Morant?

The Timberwolves could pursue a deal for Morant, but it wouldn't be easy.

The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski wrote this on X after news of Morant being on the block emerged:

"The Wolves will inherently be linked to any point guard available out there. On Ja, the money aspect of it makes it really difficult. They’d have to give up a lot of depth in a team playing really well to do a deal. Not impossible, but very, very challenging."

Morant's $39.4 million salary for this season would be difficult for the Wolves to match without trading a different piece of their core.

It comes down to what Minnesota thinks of Morant now, and in the future, and what the Grizzlies think of the assets that the Timberwolves have to offer.

In the end, it may not be the right fit.
