The Minnesota Timberwolves could potentially use some more explosiveness in the backcourt.
Mike Conley is 38 years old. Rob Dillingham hasn't grown up yet. Aside from Anthony Edwards and occasionally Donte DiVincenzo, the guard spot isn't great for the Wolves.
If they want to add depth there, they don't have to look far.
They could sign the player that Bleacher Report labels as the No. 5 free agent in the NBA right now: Tristen Newton.
This is just a logical connection, because Newton is playing in the G League for the Iowa Wolves where he's pouring in 26.7 points per game.
Newton has spent time with the Timberwolves in the past.
"Newton split time as a rookie (drafted No. 49 in 2024) with the Indiana Pacers and Minnesota Timberwolves," B/R writes. "He didn't get much of a chance to play, and after re-signing with Minnesota on a two-way contract in July, the team cut him before camp. Now on the Iowa Wolves (the Timberwolves' G League affiliate), Newton is averaging 26.7 points with 9.4 assists and 2.7 steals. If he continues playing this well, he'll get a quick NBA call-up."

Newton was a really good player in college at the University of Connecticut. He never found a way to quite latch on at the NBA level yet.
He's still just 24 years old, so he can still have a future at the highest level if he finds a way to break through.
Sometimes, a player like Newton needs a lesser team to join in order to get opportunity.
But if Minnesota wanted to bring in a guy who they probably have good information on because of the G League connection, maybe he could fit with them as a contender just as a talented player with a winning college pedigree who can add some juice off the bench.
