Former lottery pick drafted over Bam Adebayo joins Heat organization image

The Miami Heat organization added a former first round pick Wednesday.

The Heat's G-League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, signed guard Dennis Smith Jr to a deal.

Smith was drafted No. 9 overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2017 NBA Draft ahead of players like Donovan Mitchell, Bam Adebayo and OG Anunoby. He played nine NBA seasons from 2017-24, averaging 9.7 points, three rebounds and 4.2 assists.

His best pro season came during his rookie year in 2017-18, when he was named to the All-Rookie Second Team. He averaged 15.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists in 69 games that season.

Smith was traded in 2019 from Dallas to the New York Knicks as part of the trade that sent Kristaps Porzings and Tim Hardaway Jr. To New York. He spent three seasons with the Knicks before being dealt to the Detroit Pistons

He bounced around the league from there, playing for the Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets and Brooklyn Nets. He averaged 9.7 points, three rebounds and 4.2 assists in his NBA career.

He was briefly with the Mavericks ahead of this season, but was cut by the team on Oct. 17 without appearing in a game.

Smith was waived by the Wisconsin Herd before being claimed by the Skyforce. He appeared in five games for the Herd, averaging 5.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists. 

Smith, a Fayetteville, North Carolina native, played collegiately at NC State. He was named 2017 ACC Rookie of the Year and was a one-and-done with the Wolfpack.
