The Memphis Grizzlies need all the help they can get right now, as the struggling Western Conference franchise has multiple contributors nursing injuries.
In an attempt to bolster their depth early in the season, the Grizzlies signed a former Golden State Warriors guard who was part of the historic seven-team offseason trade revolved around Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant.
“The Memphis Grizzlies are signing their No. 59 pick Jahmai Mashack to a two-way NBA contract,” ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Sunday. “Mashack provides depth to a Memphis team decimated by injuries with four point guards currently sidelined.”
While Mashack didn’t set the nets on fire at Tennessee, his ability to defend on the perimeter without fouling excessively and his own as an interior defender helped him land with the Grizzlies on draft night.
That said, before Mashack could officially begin his NBA career with the Grizzlies, he had to be included in the seven-team offseason deal that sent him to the Warriors.
After the massive trade was finalized, the Warriors traded Mashack to the Grizzlies, clearing up any confusion Grizzlies fans had previously experienced.
The 23-year-old was slated to spend his first professional season in the G-League after failing to ink a two-way contract with Memphis following the Summer League.
However, the Grizzlies’ injury troubles resulted in Mashack receiving an early promotion.
