Following their demoralizing elimination at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs, Luka Dončić and the Los Angeles Lakers are aiming for a massive comeback campaign in 2025-26.
Though the 26-year-old Dončić had been preparing for a potential MVP run with the Lakers throughout the offseason and beginning of training camp, an unforeseen obstacle quickly made itself visible.
Los Angeles' 40-year-old 4-time MVP LeBron James has openly stated that his future retirement date is continuing to inch closer as he prepares for his 23rd NBA season, but it appeared as though these conversations came to a head when James took to social media to share that he'd be making a 'Second Decision' on Tuesday.
Fortunately for Dončić and the Lakers, James' massively viral post was ultimately revealed as a Hennessy advertisement and not a league-shattering retirement announcement.
If James, who will turn 41 years old in December, did announce his retirement prior to the beginning of the season, it's plausible to believe that his farewell tour could have had a negative impact on the Lakers' chances of coming away with an NBA title.
With all of the attention on James playing his final season, Dončić's motivation might have been quelled by the unavoidable distraction that the news would have introduced throughout the entire campaign.

After reaching the NBA Finals in 2024 for the first time in his career as a former member of the Dallas Mavericks, Dončić's only goal is to hang as many banners as possible while donning the purple and gold, and the spectacle of James' last ride likely would not have increased the team's odds of making a real run in a loaded Western Conference in 2025-26.
