The Los Angeles Lakers boast one of the best trios in the NBA with Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves. Even in the later stages of his career, James still wants to compete for a championship.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship," James’ agent Rich Paul told ESPN. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

However, with Doncic now the main guy on the team, adding a 3-and-D player at the trade deadline is essential.

“The Lakers won’t bring back Luka’s friend, but they could get someone better on the trade market. Fans have heard the Andrew Wiggins rumors. That is the type of player that Pelinka and the franchise should be targeting. Ideally, they shoot around 40 percent from 3-point range and play stout defense across multiple positions,” Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts wrote. “The Los Angeles Lakers are getting their hand forced by Luka Doncic’s greatness. The prime superstar is eager to win his first championship after guiding Dallas to the NBA Finals in 2024.”

The Lakers appear to have a target in mind: New Orleans Pelicans’ Herb Jones.

“The Lakers will pursue Herb Jones on the trade market, once the 3-22 Pelicans officially go into sell mode soon. After pursuing Andrew Wiggins throughout the summer, Los Angeles is now gearing up to aggressively chase Jones utilizing expiring contracts and future draft capital,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery posted.

Jones is a young, lengthy player who would fit perfectly with JJ Redick’s defensive philosophy. If the Lakers have a weak spot this season, it’s a lack of true athleticism—but Jones would address that.

The Pelicans are in a difficult position, making a roster shakeup likely in the near future. Jones is coming off an extension, which could make him an ideal trade candidate as New Orleans looks to shed salary.
