The Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the NBA’s hottest teams to start the season, proving it once again when they ran through the Milwaukee Bucks by a final score of 119-95. Having won three of their last four games, you’d think head coach JJ Redick wouldn’t have anything to complain about… right?

Unless your name is Bronny James, you’re in the clear. If your name is Bronny James, Redick showed no signs of holding back his frustration. During the opening minutes of the game, Bronny received the ball on not one, but two wide-open possessions that could’ve resulted in three-point attempts. Instead, he hesitated and passed them up, prompting this NSFW response from Redick.

James’ lack of confidence shooting the ball drew attention from fans everywhere and stood as one of the main reasons the second-year guard played just 10 minutes, despite being listed in the starting lineup.

It’s clear the Lakers are looking to elevate Bronny’s development faster than perhaps any second-round pick in NBA history — as the last thing a franchise wants, after drafting the son of their superstar, is for his predecessor to fail. Across nine games, Bronny earned his first start of the season as Redick experimented with potential lineups alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

As for Bronny, his hesitation as a shooter is present throughout his game. He’s attempted more than five shots in a single contest just once this season — though in that outing, he posted a season-high nine points on 66.7% shooting.

James, regardless of whose blood runs through his veins, is still his own player with his own mindset. It’s a mindset that’s clearly still a work in progress, but one that desperately needs a boost of confidence. Perhaps the crowd constantly begging him to shoot whenever he touches the ball has pushed him into overthinking every play — let alone every possession he’s involved in.

In the end, Bronny will have to find that assurance somewhere else. Until JJ Redick begins to view him as a reliable member of the rotation, James should be looking to shoot the ball whenever the opportunity presents itself — no matter who’s guarding him.
