Ayton sidelined; Lakers star out vs. Grizzlies

The Los Angeles Lakers secured their initial victory in NBA Cup group stage action on Friday evening, overcoming the Memphis Grizzlies with a score of 117–112 at FedExForum. Luka Doncic put on another spectacular performance away from home, racking up 44 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. This season, Doncic has achieved 40-plus points in all three games he's participated in. In the win, Austin Reaves contributed 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Deandre Ayton, however, captured attention — and sparked worry — for undesirable reasons. Ayton performed well in the initial half, netting nine points with a 4-for-6 shooting record, yet his unavailability during the latter half left spectators bewildered. Jaxson Hayes was chosen by head coach JJ Redick to start in the second half, and when the cameras focused on the Lakers' bench, Ayton was absent.

According to Lakers insider Dave McMenamin, Ayton later returned to the bench with a wrap around his lower back. He reportedly planned to rejoin the game and collaborated with the training personnel, but ultimately did not play again.

Considering the Lakers' difficulties at the center spot last year, supporters are naturally worried about Ayton's future availability. Los Angeles' depth has already been challenged by injuries this season; LeBron James hasn't played yet in the 2025–26 season, and Doncic has sat out two games.

Following a day of rest on Saturday, the Lakers are scheduled to play at home in Crypto.com Arena on Sunday against the Miami Heat.
