The Los Angeles Lakers had a strange run in December to close out 2025.

After being one of the top teams in a tough Western Conference through the first few months of the season, the Lakers have hit a rough patch. The Ringer’s Bill Simmons wanted to highlight the deficits for the Lakers’ seven losses before ringing in the new year.

Via @BillSimmons: The Lakers had 7 losses in December — by 17, 21. 13, 15, 24, 23 and 22 points. Happy New Year!

The Lakers finished December 2025 with a 5-7 record.

Although the team was hopeful to find better chemistry with LeBron James back in the mix full-time after his rare absence early on, it simply hasn’t clicked yet for the Lakers.

Defensively, the Lakers have been struggling all season long and they continue to trend in the wrong direction. The head coach, JJ Redick, reached a breaking point, calling out his team for its lack of execution, and the players aren’t exactly pushing back.

The seven losses occurred against the Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, and the Detroit Pistons. Everybody listed is within the postseason picture for the time being, which isn’t a great look for a Lakers team that wants to contend for a title.

The Lakers are back on the court on Saturday night to take on the Memphis Grizzlies. They are now chasing the Houston Rockets in the standings, trailing by one game for the fifth seed.
