The Houston Rockets traded for Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns in the NBA offseason. In the process, the Rockets traded away Jalen Green for him and they didn't have to give up any other promising young players for him.

Houston is in line to win an NBA championship for the 2025-2026 NBA season. Durant is the scorer that the Rockets needed on there roster. The culture and everything else is set in place. With Durant having one year remaining on his contract, is there any chance that he is going to sign a contract extension anytime soon?

Houston Rockets Want to Sign Tari Eason to a Contract Extension Before Kevin Durant

William Guillory of the Athletic is a staff and mainly covers the New Orleans Pelicans, but he had some burning questions about the Rockets as the 2025-2026 NBA season approaches. One of the questions Guillory has is when will Durant sign his extension with the Rockets? Guillory had some interesting insight on this and said,

"This hasn’t become a big deal yet because all signs point to Durant inking some form of an extension in the coming weeks that will tie him to Houston for the foreseeable future. As of Wednesday, however, the 36-year-old still has only one year and approximately $54.7 million remaining on his current deal.

The belief among many around the NBA is that Houston is working to secure a long-term extension with Eason — who also has one year remaining on his contract — before inking Durant’s new deal. The hope is that once both are secured, the Rockets will have a much better understanding of what the financial future looks like for this current core."

The Rockets will do everything they can to make sure Durant will not become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Even though Houston didn't give up a whole lot to get Durant, they want to make sure he potentially finishes his NBA career with the Rockets.

During the 2024-2025 NBA season with the Suns, he averaged 26.6 PPG, 6.0 APG, 4.2 APG, 1.2 BPG, and 0.8 SPG. Durant also shot 52.7% from the field, 43.0% from three, and 83.9% from the free-throw line. It will be important for the Rockets to give him a long-term extension because even though he is 36 years old, Durant is still one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA.
