Warriors' Kent Lacob leaves team after decade with Golden State image

The Golden State Warriors are on the cusp of big changes, with the most recent change being the sudden departure of Kent Lacob from the organization.

In a recent article from Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, the reasoning for his departure was revealed, including what Joe Lacob's reaction was to the news that his son was to leave the organization.

"Well, that took some balls." Joe Lacob said in response to Kent announcing his plan to leave the organization.

He had been with the Warriors, working under Joe for the past ten years. He helped the team win NBA Championships and enjoyed the time he spent with the organization. But after a decade, Kent decided to part from the organization.

"For the last 10 years, he's lived in the NBA trenches." Thompson writes. "Kent's been part of three championships and is forever connected to one of the great eras in baseball history."

But, despite such a strong history and incredible resume working with the Warrirors, his decision to step away came amid major life changes.

MOREA former Golden State Warriors frontcourt asset is now a member of the Boston Celtics.

"But a decade engulfed in a world carved for him didn't exactly produce contentment." Thompson writes. "He's 32 now. He's getting married soon. And he couldn't live with himself if he didn't even try to make his own way. Attempt to exist, professionally, outside of Joe Lacob's world."

It's a massive commitment for Kent, as even though he has a clear runway to continue in the NBA, he's stepping away from Joe's influence to make his own mark on the world. That's not an easy decision to make, and the decision came down right before a key time.

Kent announced his decision to Joe in his home office shortly before the 2025 NBA Draft in June. After a decade with the team and helping contribute to one of the best eras in basketball and sports history, he's stepping away.

Golden State has been one of the most prominent teams in the NBA, and Kent could've stayed with such an organization for a long time. But, he's leaving to pursue his own business ventures.

It's a major risk, but one that's garnered the respect of Joe, who has always urged his family to take risks. Kent is out of the Warriors' job, as he's trying to establish himself outside of his father's shadow.
