Warriors offer young forward with star potential $45 million in free agency image

The Golden State Warriors still haven’t done anything to improve their roster this offseason. They’ve lost Kevon Looney and are far from finding a replacement. They also continue to be at a standstill with Jonathan Kuminga. Contract negotiations aren’t going well at all. Right now, the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings have shown interest in a Kuminga trade.

Shams Charania and Anthony Slater recently gave a Jonathan Kuminga update on ESPN, detailing some of the offers the promising young forward has received.

“The Golden State Warriors made another push to retain Jonathan Kuminga over the past several days, but the restricted free agent is continuing to decline their two-year, $45 million contract offer, sources told ESPN on Wednesday…Kuminga's decision is due in large part to the Warriors' insistence on having a team option for the second season and their unwillingness to let him maintain the built-in no-trade clause, sources said.”

This is a reasonable offer. Kuminga is still widely unproven, and while he has shown tons of potential, he isn’t currently a $20+ million player.

Still, Kuminga has gotten much more lucrative offers from the Kings and Suns. He is playing hardball with the Warriors and isn’t going to accept anything below his perceived worth.

So while many are criticizing the Warriors for not making any free agency moves, they are actually trying. The problem is that they can’t find a Kuminga trade destination that is giving them an offer that interests them.

Until then, there will be no Kuminga trade. Kuminga also doesn’t want to sign the offers that the Warriors are giving him. Until one side gives way, the Warriors will continue to be hamstrung by the Kuminga situation.
