Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry shocked the NBA world on Nov. 13 when he elected to part ways with Under Armour after 12 years.

While many are unsure why the two parties decided to go their separate ways, Forbes’ Tim Newcomb broke down the reasoning behind the unexpected move.

“It all comes as UA continues what it calls a ‘restructuring plan,” Newcomb wrote last Monday.

“With revenues still declining at UA—the most recent results announced Sept. 30 showed a net loss of nearly $19 million on revenue of $1.33 billion, and the quarter before that showing a 4% decline—Plank has a plan in place. It’s one that doesn’t include Curry.”

Now that Curry is a free agent in the sneaker world, it’s reasonable to assume that the four-time NBA champion will have plenty of suitors at his disposal.

With Nike reportedly being a viable option for Curry, Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant felt inclined to send a four-word message to the future Hall of Fame point guard following his departure from Under Armour.

“That (Curry signing with Nike) would be incredible,” Durant said Friday before elaborating.

“I hope that happens. Yeah, he should — no disrespect to Under Armour — he should have always been a Nike athlete.”

“But he built his brand, and this is an exciting time for him to be able to choose, and to have people out there that still want your services.”

Durant originally signed with Nike in 2007 as a first-year contributor but inked a lifetime contract with the notable footwear and apparel company in 2023.

Durant, who played alongside Stephen Curry in the Bay for three seasons (winning two championships), has been active with Nike over the years, releasing over 15 versions of his Nike KD sneakers.

With Durant among the faces of Nike in 2025, it was wise for the 15-time All-Star to speak highly of the company in public and persuade Curry to join the team.

Will it ever happen? Who knows, but it’s definitely an interesting concept to envision.
