The Golden State Warriors are the only NBA team this offseason yet to acquire a player via trade or free agency.
That's mostly thanks to their ongoing restricted free agency negotiation with forward Jonathan Kuminga.
The most recent reporting suggests that Kuminga and Golden State are nowhere near coming to terms on a long-term extension, and the former G League Ignite star may end up on the qualifying offer for the 2025-26 season.
Warriors, Kuminga Headed Towards One-Year Pact
Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.com reported that the Warriors have had no luck finding a sign-and-trade partner for the 22-year-old forward's services. With no long-term deal in place, Kuminga is set to play on the qualifying offer this year (which shakes out to be a one-year $7.9 million deal) and test unrestricted free agency in the Summer of 2026.
"There haven't been any indications suggesting that the Warriors are thinking of changing their offer, and unless they do so over the course of the next week, Kuminga is prepared to end talks and accept his qualifying offer, league sources said." Siegel wrote.
According to Siegel, the Warriors' offer is a two-year $45 million deal with a team option in year two and Kuminga waiving his right to a no-trade clause. Clearly, a team-friendly deal for Golden State.
"At the end of the day, Kuminga wants to feel valued, and the Warriors haven't given him ample reasons to want to stay."
It seems that a divorce is impending between Kuminga and the Warriors, and this is most likely the last season we'll see of the Democratic Republic of the Congo native in the Bay Area.
