Although the Golden State Warriors have yet to make a move this offseason amid Jonathan Kuminga’s contract standoff, the team has prepared contingency plans. Even with Kuminga’s future uncertain, the Warriors have continued conversations with free agents and are ready to act once the situation is resolved.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Golden State intends to sign four players next week: Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II and Seth Curry.
Horford, the most notable addition, was considered the top veteran available on the market and is expected to be signed with the mid-level exception. He would provide a steady presence at center alongside Quentin Post.
Despite considering retirement, this report confirms that the 18-year NBA veteran Horford will return to action for his 19th season, with his fifth different team. Last season for the Boston Celtics, Horford averaged nine points, six rebounds and two assists.
Melton and Payton II are set to return as defensive specialists, offering hustle, versatility and bench depth.
Seth Curry will also join the roster, marking the first time he will play alongside his brother Stephen Curry in the NBA. After spending last season with his hometown Charlotte Hornets, Curry is expected to serve as a perimeter scoring option off the bench.
While the Kuminga negotiations have lingered, Golden State has positioned itself to strengthen its roster with proven veterans. After these four additions, the Warriors would have two open roster spots — one likely reserved for Kuminga, should he remain with the team, and another up for grabs as training camp approaches.
