Jamal Murray and the Denver Nuggets had a chance to knock off the high-powered Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.

In fact, Detroit gave the Nuggets an optimal opportunity, at least on paper.

But then one of the weirdest endings to an NBA game in recent times struck Murray and the Nuggets, and they ended up losing, 109-107.

We'll pick it up with 3.5 seconds left.

Murray prepares to shoot from beyond the 3-point arc, trailing 107-104, and Detroit's Javonte Green fouls him.

If Murray makes all three, it's a tie game.

Instead, he missed the first, but then he made the second and the third, down one.

Denver had to give up its last foul before the bonus, then foul again, which it accomplished by the time 2.0 seconds were remaining.

Tobias Harris made both foul shots for the Pistons, and the Nuggets used a timeout to advance the ball, down three.

With 0.7 seconds on the clock, Murray was fouled shooting a 3, again by Green, so he again went to the line with a chance to tie.

This time, Murray made the first. 

But then he missed the second, and at that point, he had to intentionally miss the third, and the Nuggets didn't get another shot off.

Murray is a career 87.1% free throw shooter.

In this pivotal sequence, he went 3-for-6 at the line.

Odds tell you that he'd make all three foul shots on a trip to the line about two-thirds of the time. It didn't happen here, though.

And while a loss is a lot more than the final 3.5 seconds, this one had to be particularly painful for Murray.
