Nuggets nab defensive-minded sharpshooter in latest NBA mock trade image

This offseason, the Denver Nuggets have been hard at work reshaping the supporting cast around Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. While they've already acquired a handful of complementary pieces, one mock trade has them utilizing some of their remaining assets to bring in a young two-way talent.

The trade

Nuggets Receive - Terence Davis, Keon Ellis, 2029 second-round pick

Hawks Receive: Julian Strawther

Kings Receive: Zeke Nnaji, Peyton Watson, 2031 first-round pick swap

While Julian Strawther and Peyton Watson have shown nice flashes for the Nuggets, Ellis is someone who could play a key role for the Nuggets. In terms of the archetype of roles they want, he is a perfect fit for Denver. Ellis is a strong perimeter defender and is an effective floor spacer. Last season for the Kings, he averaged 8.3 PPG and 1.5 SPG while shooting 43.3% of his three-point attempts.

With his complementary skill set, Ellis would be an X-factor for the Nuggets if acquired. He can take on tougher backcourt matchups next to Jamal Murray, taking some responsibility off his plate. On top of that, Ellis would thrive as a kick-out option from three when defenses collapse on Jokic.

The major aspect of this hypothetical trade is Ellis' contract. He is on a very team-friendly deal now, but that will change in the near future. He is set to hit unrestricted free agency after next season, where he is sure to get a substantial raise. Knowing this, the Nuggets should only part with all these assets if they know they have a strong shot at retaining him beyond 2026.

As a reliable rotation player who can produce on both ends of the floor, Ellis is the kind of depth piece who could help Denver contend in a loaded Western Conference.
