Nikola Jokic informs Nuggets stunning decision surrounding eligible contract extension image

Nikola Jokic has been one of the best players in the NBA almost every year in the last five or so years.

He's a priceless player to the Nuggets, and, except for a few untouchable players, any given team would trade anyone for Jokic.

Jokic is eligible for an extension this offseason, but reports just came out that he is making an eyebrow-raising decision.

What is the update on Jokic?

Bennett Durando of the Denver Post reported, "Nikola Jokic has informed the Nuggets he won't sign a contract extension this offseason."

HoopsHype detailed, "Jokic, 29, can ink a three-year, $206 million maximum extension that would tack onto his existing supermax deal, which runs through the 2026-27 season and includes a player option for 2027-28."

Now, this doesn't mean that Jokic is on his way out anytime soon, necessarily.

This is a smart move on Jokic's part because he is eligible for a bigger contract if he waits until next offseason.

He was eligible to sign a 3-yr/$212 million ($70.67 AAV) contract starting Tuesday but can make an extra $80 million if he waits until next summer.

In today's NBA, where some insane contracts are being signed, Jokic, out of all players, deserves to get every penny that he's worth by waiting it out.

Nikola Jokic was runner-up for the MVP in the 2024-25 season, averaging 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists.
