Dallas’ backcourt is set to have a much different look next season.
Over the past few months, the Mavericks have been looking for options to bolster the point guard spot after trading Luka Doncic and watching Kyrie Irving go down with a torn ACL. Although it’s not a perfect solution, the team recently agreed to a deal with D’Angelo Russell, which should certainly help that situation.
While the team still appears to be in the market for some more guard help, the Mavericks won’t be bringing back one of their veterans in that spot. On Wednesday, Shams Charania reported that Spencer Dinwiddie agreed to a one-year deal with the Charlotte Hornets.
Although Dinwiddie is past his prime, he was a key part of the Mavericks’ season last year. With so many injuries throughout the year, Dinwiddie managed to suit up for 79 games, starting 30.
Of course, the Mavericks likely want to forget last season happened and look toward the future. With Wednesday’s news, it appears that future won’t feature Dinwiddie, who had returned to Dallas for his second stint with the team last season.
Dinwiddie’s first stint in Dallas began at the 2022 trade deadline when he was acquired in a deal for Kristaps Porzingis. After helping the Mavericks make the conference finals, Dinwiddie was dealt to Brooklyn in 2023 to help Dallas acquire Kyrie Irving.

After averaging 11 points and 4.4 assists last season, Dinwiddie could be a solid veteran for the Hornets. With Dallas letting him walk, it appears that the team feels comfortable with its point guard options going into next season.
