What guard is Dallas expected to sign?
With Kyrie Irving likely out for most of the 2025-26 NBA season, Dallas needs to find a replacement at the guard position until Kyrie returns.
Marc Stein reported that it is expected that the Mavs will sign former All-Star guard D'Angelo Russell at the start of free agency.
They have described their guard needs this offseason as a player who has the ability to start, but then slide into a backup guard role after Irving returns. Russell can be just that.

He's not the perfect player, but he has a ton of experience in the NBA and can fill a scoring/playmaking role well with Dallas.
He'll still be playing with rookie Cooper Flagg and Anthony Davis, so it's not like he'll be expected to do everything.
Stein projects the deal to be around a 2-year/$12 million contract.
Russell last played for the Nets and Lakers in the 2024-25 season, averaging 12.6 PPG and 5.1 APG.
