The Dallas Mavericks seem ready to move on from Anthony Davis.
One reason why is because a massive financial decision awaits them -- or whichever team trades for Davis -- in the months ahead.
The Mavericks are entering a reset around #1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, and Dallas is hoping to field a younger, cheaper roster -- allowing the franchise to duck under the NBA's second apron and avoid the harsh financial penalties that come with operating over it.
Trading Davis -- and his $54 million salary -- will help the Mavericks accomplish that goal.
But it's easier said than done, even though Davis is averaging 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds when healthy this season.
ESPN's Tim Bontemps reports there is "skepticism" around the NBA that a robust trade market will develop around Davis in the weeks ahead.
Though it is in part due to Davis' injury problems, another element to trade talks around the 10-time All-Star is the salary coming his way.
Davis is owed $120 million on the maximum contract extension he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2023. On Aug. 6, the 32-year-old is eligible to sign another max extension, set at four years and $275 million.
Any team parting with player or draft assets to acquire Davis has to be prepared to pay this price to keep the future Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. And given Davis' age and injury record, it seems unlikely a contender will want to do that.
