Hornets surprisingly part ways with 11-year NBA veteran image

The Charlotte Hornets made a shocking roster move today, cutting ties with veteran point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

"The Charlotte Hornets are waiving guard Spencer Dinwiddie, sources tell ESPN. Dinwiddie, an 11-year NBA veteran, signed a one-year deal with the Hornets in July free agency. Charlotte had to release a guaranteed salary ahead of season opener next week."

Clearly, the Hornets felt Dinwiddie's roster spot was best used on a player with more upside.

The 11-year NBA guard figured to be a veteran presence on a Hornets team that has lacked leadership in recent years, as indicated by his priority signing in July.

But three months later, Charlotte decided to move in another direction.

Dinwiddie is the definition of a journeyman, having spent time with six different teams, including the Hornets, over his decade-plus NBA career.

The former Colorado Buffalo was initially drafted by the Detroit Pistons and spent the first two years of his career there.

A seven-year stint with the Brooklyn Nets followed, where he experienced ups and downs as Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving came and went.

Following his first stint in Brooklyn, Dinwiddie bounced around the league, having been a member of the Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles Lakers, and making intermittent stops in Brooklyn once again.

Now, a free agent once again, Dinwiddie will surely have some suitors in the market for veteran point guard help.

New York Knicks backup point guard Malcolm Brogdon just retired, leaving New York in need of more depth at the position.
