Celtics' Derrick White ties all-time NBA blocks record image

It's always a bit of a surprise when a guard is an instinctually special shot blocker.

A generation ago, Dwyane Wade carried that mantle. For this era of players, it's Boston Celtics guard Derrick White.

He proved his immense abilities on Tuesday night when he blocked seven shots against the Utah Jazz.

That ties an all-time NBA single-game record for a guard.

White added 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists for good measure.

White went for another block late in the game, too, against Jazz rookie guard Walter Clayton Jr., but the Florida national champion put White on a poster.

After the game, White laughed about it with a sideline reporter, noting that nowhere in Clayton's scouting report did it say he could do that.

It was easy to laugh after such a special night at the office for White.

A guard's blocked shots aren't the same as a center who is just standing in the paint. White is moving all over the floor, but he has the DNA to keep an eye on where and when a shot is going up, and the athleticism and timing to get a piece of it.

It's really impressive to watch, and White now has himself a part of history.
