The Atlanta Hawks may be about to enter a new era.
Trae Young appears to be on the trading block, and a deal could progress quickly.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Washington Wizards are making a push for Young.
"The Wizards have emerged as a legitimate potential trade destination for Atlanta's Trae Young, @TheSteinLine has learned, in a deal construction centered around CJ McCollum's expiring contract," Stein wrote Monday night on X.
Young at one point was viewed as the face of the franchise in Atlanta.
This season, though, Young missed ample time with injury. While he was out, Jalen Johnson proved himself a strong leader of the Hawks.
And when Young got back, the Hawks started losing. It affirmed the concerns about him not being the player to lead a team to a championship.
Young's shooting from the outside has regressed since he entered the league, and while he compiles plenty of points and assists, he evens that out by being too small to be an effective defender at any spot on the floor.
For the Wizards, it's a logical pursuit. It's hard for them to get star players, and this would be a route to do it. They'll hope that it's buying low on Young.
The Hawks would then get to decide what to do with McCollum's contract. It probably wouldn't hurt to play out the season with the talented 2-guard and then just let that money come off their books.
It's not a done deal yet, but it's the kind that could be a major shakeup for two teams who aren't always in the Eastern Conference spotlight.
And if anyone else is interested in Young, this news will get them to kick their pursuit into a higher gear.
