Why Blue Jays may lose free agent pitcher Max Scherzer to Giants image

Max Scherzer was a part of the Toronto Blue Jays team that made it to extra innings in Game 7 of the World Series.

He wasn't a major part of proceedings down the stretch, though, despite being a future Hall of Fame pitcher.

Scherzer's career is on the downslope, and with Toronto already signing Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce this offseason, it's clear Mad Max will be heading elsewhere in free agency.

Where?

Try the San Francisco Giants. They'd make a ton of sense.

"There is a presumption that Scherzer could pitch for his good friend and new San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello," ESPN's Buster Olney wrote on Friday.

Two decades ago, Scherzer was a promising pitcher at the University of Missouri. Vitello was an assistant coach for Mizzou, working to help mold Scherzer into a future superstar.

Vitello is now the new manager for the Giants. They went the unconventional route of hiring Vitello from his post as head coach at the University of Tennessee.

This would be an intriguing signing for another reason, too.

In 2025, the Giants had Justin Verlander on their staff.

If Verlander leaves, will the Giants just replace him with a different Hall of Fame pitcher in Scherzer?

It's certainly a cool subplot. They're guys that fans still want to see pitch, even on the wrong side of 40 years old.

And Scherzer and the Giants certainly seem like a good match.
