Max Scherzer has been imposing fear on opposing batters for quite a long time now. He got his start back in 2008 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and has been going strong ever since.
At 41 years old, many who are still playing the game at that age have taken a considerable step backward, but not Scherzer. He is still dominant and has the ability to control the game every time he gets a start.
Scherzer was electric in the postseason and a huge help for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025. Now, he hits the open market as a free agent, and some were not sure if he would be back for the 2026 season.
Max Scherzer still competitive and not ready to retire, says Scott Boras
Max Scherzer has not uttered a word that he is considering retiring. He still has the skills to be a great backend starter, and with his experience, he will be a huge get for a contending team.
His Agent, Scott Boras, recently spoke about his aging RHP and what the future looks like, via USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
"I mean when it's coming out at 95-96 [mph], and when you go into he playoffs and do what he did, it's really, you know, Maximilian.... It's not about chronological age to him, it's about what he can do for a team, what he does in a locker room, the respect he has in the game. He is a remarkably committed performer.... I would expect that he'll pitch as long as he's competitive."
Boras states that as long as Scherzer feels he can do some good for a team, he will continue to pitch. And given how he looked this past season, there may be no stopping the three-time Cy Young Award winner anytime soon.
