Have the Blue Jays ever made Christmas roster moves? History of holiday transactions image

The Toronto Blue Jays have been one of the most active teams in free agency so far this winter. They've signed Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Tyler Rogers so far.

But, they're far from done. An infielder or outfielder atop the market could be in line for the Blue Jays. Kyle Tucker, Bo Bichette, Cody Bellinger, Alex Bregman, or Ketel Marte could be in play, and with Christmas coming around, the front office could present a great gift to fans this winter.

Making such a move wouldn't be the first time that the Blue Jays have been active on Christmas. While Baseball Reference doesn't mention any transactions on Christmas Day, the Blue Jays have been active on Christmas Eve, including one cheerful signing who became beloved in Toronto.

Blue Jays' history of Christmas roster moves includes addition of beloved infielder

The most recent Christmas singing from the Blue Jays is infielder Munenori Kawasaki. He ingrained himself into the Blue Jays fandom after his 2013 Christmas Eve signing.

He played in 96 games in 2013 and recorded 1.0 bWAR before re-signing on Christmas Eve in 2013 with the Blue Jays. He played two more seasons with Toronto, recording 0.4 and 0.2 bWAR seasons for the Blue Jays over 82 and 23 games, respectively.

Kawasaki was an interesting roster move from the Blue Jays, and just as the holiday season can spread cheer, so too did Kawasaki in Toronto.

Before that, Kawasaki signing, the Blue Jays signed Mike Flanagan on Christmas Eve, 1988. The Cy Young winner and All-Star starter was almost a decade removed from his best play when he signed with Toronto.

In the 1989 season, the year after this Christmas Eve signing, Flanagan posted a 3.93 ERA and 1.3 bWAR in 30 appearances. An abbreviated five-game 1990 season was his last with the Blue Jays.

Neither Kawasaki nor Flanagan were incredible signing from Christmas Eve's past, but they weren't net negatives either.

The Blue Jays could make their first Christmas Day roster move in franchise history in 2025, or they could be patient in their pursuit of the top position players left on the market.

But, if they do decide to make a Christmas signing, they have some decent history with such holiday roster moves, as Flanagan and Kawasaki aren't the worst free agent signings.
