Blue Jays sign former Pirates catching prospect with 'formidable presence' image

No one in the Toronto Blue Jays organization is taking the starting catcher's job from Alejandro Kirk. At least not for a long time.

But it's never too early to prepare for the future and add depth at each position on the field.

According to the Blue Jays' transaction log, they signed 24-year-old catcher Geovanny Planchart to a minor league deal on December 16. Planchart, 24, elected free agency from the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in November.

The Venezuela native hit.193/.307/.293 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 56 games at High-A Greensboro in 2025. Those numbers won't make anyone jump off their couch, but his scouting report indicates Planchart may have more potential in the tank.

Planchart is an 'aggressive' player

Planchart's game is still developing, but he possesses a few skill sets to keep an eye on. He made his professional debut in 2019 in the Dominican Summer League.

"Planchart is known for his aggressive playing style and exceptional defensive skills. As a catcher, he's praised for his quick reflexes and strong arm, making him a formidable presence behind the plate," reads one of Planchart's scouting reports

"Offensively, Planchart exhibits a consistent batting average, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. His strategic approach to the game allows him to read pitchers effectively, making him a valuable asset to his team."

Planchart will likely have an opportunity to showcase his skills for his new organization, the Blue Jays, at spring training.
