The Toronto Blue Jays have made it known that they plan to spend a lot of money this offseason, but that doesn’t mean they won’t also look to shed some payroll from their existing roster.
If the Blue Jays are trying to become the team they want to be, it may require saving money in other areas.
One player who is now coming up in trade rumors to do just that is right-hander Jose Berríos, who might no longer fit with what the Blue Jays are trying to do.
The Blue Jays are in a very good spot to add talent, but with Berríos’ seven-year, $131 million deal still on the books, that’s obviously something they may want to move.
According to the latest from Mitch Bannon of The Athletic, the Blue Jays are open to moving on from the veteran.
“Ponce’s addition could instigate a significant winter trade, and the Jays, a league source said, are willing to listen on Berríos,” Bannon wrote. “The right-hander pitched through injury at the end of the 2025 season, lost his rotation spot, wasn’t on Toronto’s playoff roster at any point, and departed from the team ahead of the World Series.
“While Berríos has been a steady figure in Toronto’s rotation and clubhouse since 2021, a separation may be best for both sides. Adding Ponce, instead of a cheaper rotation depth option, signals that separation may be increasingly likely.”
If the Blue Jays can cut ties with Berríos in a deal that makes sense, even if they have to attach some prospects to move his salary, and use that flexibility to add elsewhere, it would be an A+ move by the front office.
